This webinar covers the basics of designing and installing a graywater system.

What is a laundry to landscape graywater system?

Graywater is the gently used water that washed your clothes in your washing machine. It has traces of dirt from your dirty clothes and the soap you used to wash them. These contaminants make it unsafe as drinking water but perfect for outdoor irrigation! Graywater is a great option for watering certain types of plants. Please note that graywater is NOT water from your toilet, kitchen sink, or any water that has been in contact with fecal matter.

Laundry to Landscape graywater systems involve a simple addition to your laundry's existing plumbing.

A laundry to landscape system is an addition to your current laundry system. In a graywater system, a 3-way diverter valve is installed so that the wastewater can be diverted to drain into your landscape rather than the sewer. Pipes leading from the washer go through the house’s exterior wall, tunnel underground and are released into the soil where it is taken up by plant roots.

Why should you install a graywater system?

Graywater is a great way to conserve water by using the same water twice- once for washing, and again for irrigation. The Town of Windsor and Daily Acts are offering Windsor water customers a free parts kit that includes the supplies you need to install your system.

What are some things to consider?

The parts in the kit are only suitable for graywater systems attached to your washing machine. Systems linked to sinks or showers require permitting and different parts. The irrigated landscape must be either level with or sloping downhill from the house. It is also important to note that laundry products with chlorine, boron, or sodium cannot be used with this system because they are harmful to plants. There are also some types of plants that are unsuitable for graywater. Please see the table below:
